In the fast-evolving world of technology, adaptability and foresight are key to success. Few embody this more than Erika Owens, co-founder and SVP of Maintenance at Balata Data. With nearly 11 years in the industry, her journey from print advertising to leading a top-tier Third Party Maintenance (TPM) provider is a testament to resilience, strategic thinking, and an unwavering commitment to service excellence.
A Leap of Faith into Tech
Before stepping into the tech industry in July 2014, Erika worked in print advertising—an industry facing rapid decline. Recognizing the need for a career shift, she set her sights on technology, a space that continues to evolve and expand.
“Technology isn’t going anywhere, so I figured it was a ‘safe’ bet,” she recalls. That decision laid the foundation for a career defined by perseverance and impressive achievements.
Women Don’t Brag About Their Accomplishments Enough
Despite her many successes, Erika admits that talking about them doesn’t always come naturally. “Women don’t brag about their accomplishments enough!” she says. When asked about her proudest professional achievement, she highlights her ability to transition between industries and quickly establish herself as a top performer in TPM sales. “My ‘ramp-up period’ felt like it was taking forever, but in the grand scheme of things, it was a blip on the radar.”
The Power of a Great Mentor
Finding a mentor can be a game-changer in any career, but Erika acknowledges that it’s not always easy. “I had several managers early in my professional career that I didn’t look up to for several reasons,” she shares. However, she eventually found a mentor in JJ Jeanguenat, a leader who provided the right balance of autonomy and support. “I think your mentor should also respect your ‘style’ and appreciate that it might not be exactly like theirs,” she explains.
For women, especially in male-dominated industries, staying true to their own approach is key. “Women sometimes have a different way of doing things, and you shouldn’t change that just to fit in.”
Advice for Women Interested in STEM
Encouraging young women to explore STEM fields is something Erika feels strongly about. “Fortunately, there are many opportunities today for young women to get involved in STEM! Whether it’s an after-school program, a STEM summer camp, or even coding classes for adults, dip your toe in and see if you like it. And if it’s not for you, that’s okay too. The best thing you can do is just try it out with no pressure.”
Battling Imposter Syndrome
Even with a proven track record, Erika has experienced imposter syndrome—feelings of self-doubt and fear of not being “good enough,” despite evidence of competence. “Studies show that women wait until they are 80% qualified to apply for a position, while men will go for it at feeling 50% qualified,” she points out.
So how does she combat it? “’Fake it ‘til you make it’ is a common phrase, and there’s something to that. But trying too hard to be something you’re not can hurt you, too. I think what’s most important is to just be genuine and tell yourself it’s okay to learn along the way.”
Building Balata Data
In December 2022, Erika took on her biggest challenge yet—co-founding Balata Data alongside five partners. As SVP of Maintenance, she has been instrumental in scaling the company into a major player in the TPM space. With a relentless focus on service delivery and operational efficiency, she has helped solidify Balata Data’s reputation as a trusted provider known for excellence.
Her transition from an uncertain industry to leading innovation in tech is an inspiring reminder that embracing change can open doors to new opportunities. As Balata Data continues to grow, Erika’s leadership remains a driving force behind the company’s success.
